United States Geography

Can you or your students not only identify the 50 states, but spell each state's name? We have new quizzes that test not only identification of the 50 states (by region), but require quiz-takers to spell the states' names.

States of the American Northeast included in this online game are: Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Maine, Connecticut, New York, Delaware, New Jersey, and Maryland.

States of the American West included in this online game are: Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Alaska, Washington, Arizona, California, and Montana.

States of the American Midwest included in this online game are: Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa, North Dakota, and Minnesota.

States of the American South included in this online game are: Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, South Carolina, Virginia, and Alabama.

While you are at Student Handouts playing these fun interactive games, check out the printable versions of these quizzes. Whatever Social Studies course you are taking or teaching, printable versions of quizzes like these are great for bell work, or simply to assess students' basic knowledge levels. Administering a printed version of one of these quizzes takes only 5-10 minutes.

Teaching Tip: When your American History or World History class is beginning to study a region (such as the start of a lesson on the U.S. Civil War), give your kids the printable version of the Southern States quiz as bell work. This will: (1) Give you an idea of where the kids are at in terms of understanding the geography of the southern states, (2) Serve as a jumping-off point for study of the Confederacy. It's a nifty way to incorporate geography lessons into broader Social Studies courses.
